14 Articles About RCMP Abuses around First Nations, Metis, Inuit (Indigenous) Land Activists & More
Watch this smug turkey. The officer's name is Jason Charney and he's deliberately emptying camp drinking water.
Watch this video and then let me know in the comments below what you think. Also: read below afterward. There's a whole list of resources you can read to get a better sense of the picture surrounding the RCMP, their practices, and their priorities.
As someone who studied political science, this is an attempt usurp and remove necessary resources for the lives of protesters and activists. It undermines their rights to peaceful protest and gathering on their own lands.
These officers may be acting under orders, they may even have colonial legal "authority" but the fact that they enjoy causing the pain and heartache is clear here in this video. These are abusers, these are bullies, these are the people who hold society back.
He smiles, he refuses to assist, and illegally prevents them from saving their own water. These are crimes against human rights and ought to be brought as charges against the RCMP - oh wait, they are!
That's right, the RCMP have been in court since they've been infringing on the civil liberties of Canadians for as long as civil rights groups can remember.
Terrace Standard Global TV Shaw aren't sharing or reporting on this side of the issue because "Business," and if you think the NDP in BC is "left," then you're not being critical enough. Read some of these to get a fuller picture of the Indigenous/First Nation/Metis/Inuit fight for lands to protect both ecosystems and watersheds. It's not just happening here in BC either, it's an issue in every territory on Turtle Island, or North America to settlers.
Note: there's articles from many sources here, so whether you're left, right, or somewhere in the middle, you'll learn something new.
And if you need evidence of how deliberately news places scrub their stories for "unwanted information," check out this article about a collision between RCMP officers going out to enforce the injunction and a logging truck. Hint: It "closed the road down" so that media groups and witnesses couldn't even get to activists to report on the actual events.
So a huge shout-out to the following places for doing their best to cover news in a more fair manner:
- APTN National News / APTN
- The Walrus
- The Tyee
- The BCCLA, (for being awesome although they're not news) and
- The Narwhal
